Hoya MiYOSMART Spectacle Lenses: Everything You Need to Know

Hoya MiYOSMART Myopia Lenses are a proven treatment for correction and management of  myopia.

By 2050, half of the world’s population—around 5 billion people—could be living with myopia^1. The condition progresses fastest in children under 10^2 especially those with high myopia. More than just a vision issue, myopia can impact a child’s confidence, independence, and daily life.

Here, we’ll share more about why we recommend MiYOSMART lenses for the treatment and management of myopia. We’ll also provide info about how MiYOSMART lenses work and the evidence supporting this technology. We have seen great success with the prescribing of MiYOSMART lenses and can advise if your child may be a good candidate for this proven technology.

Evidence Supporting MiYOSMART lenses

There is a large amount of scientific evidence that supports MiYOSMART lenses.  Hoya has conducted a number of trials and studies, as outlined below.  Over a number of years of recommending these lenses, we have seen the positive benefit of slowing the progression of myopia in children.

The evidence supporting DIMS technology includes:

  • More than 90 publications from across the world conducted on the MiYOSMART D.I.M.S. technology.

  • 8 year follow up study (conducted by Hoya) of the myopia progression in individuals wearing DIMS spectacle lenses for 8 years versus shorter durations

  • 6 year follow up study (conducted by Hoya) on the long term myopia management effect and safety in children wearing DIMS spectacle lenses for 6 years.

  • 2 year randomized clinical trial on whether DIMS spectacle lenses slow myopia progression

How Do MiYOSMART Lenses Work for Treating Myopia?

Myopia is a refractive error that causes blurred vision at a distance. Hoya MiYOSMART lenses correct this refractive error to restore sharp, clear vision.

MiYOSMART lenses are also proven to help control excessive eye growth. By slowing eye elongation, MiYOSMART lenses can effectively manage myopia in growing children. Managing myopia progression is crucial for preventing ocular health complications down the road.

Here’s a breakdown of how MiYOSMART lenses work to slow myopia:

  • DIMS technology is a lens design with dual focus.

  • The first focus is a central vision zone. Here, visual input hits the retina at the appropriate angle, providing clear, sharp vision.

  • The second focus zone features hundreds of circular segments in a honeycomb pattern (DIMS technology).

  • These two zones create dual focus on the retina where conflicting signals create something called simultaneous retinal defocus.

  • This dual focus sends strong “slow-down” signals to the eyes, signaling a reduction in eye growth. By slowing eye growth, myopia progression is managed/reduced in growing children.

Key Features and Advantages of Hoya MiYOSMART Lenses

Hoya MiYOSMART lenses feature a variety of advanced technologies and benefits, including:

Proven Reduction in Axial Elongation

Extensive evidence proves that MiYOSMART lenses can effectively slow down axial elongation. Clinical trials demonstrate up to a 60% reduction in myopia progression with MiYOSMART lenses.

D.I.M.S. Technology

Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) combines a central clear zone to enable excellent vision. This proven technology also features dual focus, signaling eye growth to slow down.

Short Adaptation Phase

We’ve found that most children adapt to wearing MiYOSMART lenses easily and quickly. Some children adapt immediately, while others may need a week or two to adjust.

High Durability

MiYOSMART lenses were built with busy, active kids in mind. Hoya knows that kids love to tumble, climb, play, and participate in sports. With a polycarbonate, scratch-resistant material, MiYOSMART lenses are durable and appropriate to keep up with your active child.

Excellent Distance Vision

MiYOSMART lenses effectively treat myopia, whilst delivering sharp, clear distance vision.

Lightweight, Comfortable Design

The lightweight design of MiYOSMART lenses minimises pressure on the ears and nose. Constructed with a slim profile and smooth edges, kids often forget they are wearing their MiYOSMART lenses.

High Safety Profile and Ease of Use

MiYOSMART is ideal for children, as they are impact resistant, do not touch the surface of the eye, and are easy to take on and off.

Who Are Hoya MiYOSMART Lenses Suited For?

We’ve seen excellent results prescribing MiYOSMART to Perth children aged 6 to 18 years for the treatment and management of myopia

Good candidates for Hoya MiYOSMART lenses include:

  • Children and teenagers, aged 6 to 18, with mild to moderate myopia

  • Children who prefer spectacles to contact lenses

  • Highly active children who need durable glasses that can stand up to the rigors of sports

  • Families seeking an evidence-based solution for myopia management

  • Children with a  prescription that is increasing / changing

  • Children who can commit to daily, consistent wear of MiYOSMART lenses. Without consistent wear time, effective myopia control results are reduced.

How Glasses with MiYOSMART Lenses Differ from Regular Glasses

Here are some key characteristics that make MiYOSMART lenses unique:

Myopia Treatment and Management in One

In many cases, single-vision spectacles can successfully provide clearer vision. However, they do not address myopia progression. This is where MiYOSMART stands out, offering proven results in slowing myopia progression.

Evidence

MiYOSMART lenses have extensive evidence, making them stand out amongst the competition. See a summary of all the Hoya MiYOSMART studies here: MiYOSMART myopia (nearsightedness) spectacle lenses) – HOYA

Availability and Accessibility

MiYOSMART lenses are widely available throughout Australia, making it easy to access them through a HOYA-authorised optometrist, such as For Eyes Optometrist.

UV Protection

MiYOSMART lenses also provide UV protection, making them ideal for sunny summer days in Perth. MiYOSMART Chameleon photochromic spectacle lenses or MiYOSMART Sun lenses are designed to protect eyes against harsh UV rays.

MiYOSMART Lenses and Atropine Drops

MiYOSMART lenses are compatible with low dose atropine eye drops. Recent clinical studies from Europe and China have found that the combination treatment of MiYOSMART spectacle lenses and low-dose Atropine eye drops was more effective than MiYOSMART or Atropine eye drops alone.  Therefore, where necessary, our optometrists may recommend the use of both MiYOSMART spectacle lenses and Atropine eye drops.

Convenient and Proven Myopia Management

Early intervention and effective myopia management is crucial for growing children. Slowing myopia progression can significantly reduce the risk of serious vision issues later in a child’s life.

Hoya MiYOSMART lenses feature proven, advanced technology that simultaneously treats and manages myopia.

At For Eyes Optometrist, we’ve seen excellent results when prescribing MiYOSMART lenses. For children with  myopia, we frequently recommend Hoya’s MiYOSMART lenses as a solution.
