When lenticular lenses may be the right choice

The following signs indicate that lenticular lenses may be suitable for your vision needs:

  • Prescription stronger than ±10.00 dioptres

  • Previous cataract surgery without an intra-ocular lens implant (aphakia)

  • Marked difference in prescription between the two eyes

  • Babies or toddlers needing very high power lenses

  • Glasses that feel heavy or look unusually thick

  • Desire for lighter, slimmer spectacles without compromising clarity

  • Central vision is clear but edges distort with standard lenses

  • Physical discomfort from thick lens edges pressing on the nose or ears

  • Optometrist or ophthalmologist referral for a lenticular design

At For Eyes Optometrist, we conduct thorough eye examinations, to assess whether lenticular lenses are required for your visual needs, and can design and source custom lenticular lenses perfectly suited for your prescription.

How For Eyes Optometrist can help you

  • Your appointment starts with a comprehensive eye examination by our experienced optometrists. Our optometrists will examine and confirm whether a lenticular lens (or another option) is the best match for your vision needs.

  • If you have a very high prescriptions, we specify a custom lenticular lens that places the corrective power only where you need it, keeping the rest of the lens thin and comfortable.

  • We source lenticular lenses through our partnership with a select group of Australian and overseas labs, including EssilorLuxottica’s Special Lens Laboratory in France, giving you solutions for prescriptions up to ±70 dioptres.

  • Our team works with you to choose a frame you love and ensures your new lenticular lenses fit securely and look natural, even when shapes or sizes are challenging.

  • By concentrating the prescription in a small central zone, we keep your glasses lighter and slimmer, reducing pressure on the nose and ears and making daily wear easier.

  • Lenticular lenses are ideal for babies, toddlers and adults alike. We guide parents through frame choices and fitting so young children tolerate their glasses and develop healthy vision.

  • Once your lenses arrive, we provide adjustments, maintenance tips and regular reviews to make sure your eyesight stays clear and your glasses remain comfortable.

How we specify lenticular lenses with precision accuracy

Customising lenticular lenses starts with your exact prescription. We map the high power needed and concentrate it in a central 20 to 30 millimetre zone for clear vision.

The surrounding lens is blended down to minimal power to cut thickness, weight and cosmetic bulk. Precision measurements of pupil distance, fitting height and frame shape are critical; even small errors can cause blur.

Where required we specify high index materials and free form surfacing from specialised labs in Australia or overseas to achieve extreme powers. The result is lighter, wearable correction for severe myopia, hyperopia or aphakia, ready for comfortable wear.

FAQs

  • A lenticular lens is a specialist spectacle lens for very high prescriptions. It concentrates the corrective power in a small central “button”, leaving the surrounding area with little or no power, so the lens stays thinner and lighter than a full-power alternative.

  • They are prescribed for extreme refractive errors such as aphakia (no natural lens), high myopia beyond -10.00 D, or high hyperopia above +10.00 D, and for patients who cannot have an intra-ocular lens implant after cataract surgery.

  • Most modern frames can accommodate a lenticular lens, but very large or unusually shaped frames may not blend well with the optical zone. Your optometrist will guide frame choice.

  • Book an appointment with your optometrist for a detailed prescription assessment and frame fitting. At For Eyes, we provide customised advice and lens sourcing for complex prescriptions.

  • They are produced in specialised lens laboratories, including a limited number in Australia and several overseas facilities such as EssilorLuxottica’s special-lens lab in France. Complex prescriptions may therefore take longer and cost more to supply.

We provide thorough eye examinations that both map out the exact outline of your retina and provide your prescription, which we submit through our partnered lenticular lens suppliers to source fully custom lenticular lenses.
